Event Honors Frontline Workers Who Support People with Disabilities
Independence, OHIO –Koinonia will host “Casino Royale” a casino themed appreciation party at the Kiwanis Pavilion in honor of National Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Recognition Week on Tuesday, September 12th from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The event is being held to honor the work of Koinonia’s direct support professionals who provide services to hundreds of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community.
DSP’s will each receive a swag bag that includes a Giant Eagle gift card, along with “Koinonia Bucks” that they can use to play several casino type games setup in the pavilion. The Independence branch of Dollar Bank is also sponsoring a money machine that each party attendee will get a turn to see how many of the Bucks they can grab. In the end, Koinonia Bucks are turned in for raffle tickets and other prizes. The party also features a food truck, DJ music, and a wide selection of raffle baskets and other prizes.
“This week we honor and celebrate Direct Support Professionals. Koinonia’s DSP’s are among the very best in the workforce. We are proud to have these dedicated associates on the Koinonia team and committed to improving the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Diane Beastrom, President and CEO of Koinonia. “Medicaid reimbursement rates make it challenging to pay the wages they deserve, so we have found a few other ways to show our appreciation.”
The Koinonia Board of Directors issued a Proclamation designating the week beginning September 10, 2017, as “Koinonia Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week” to show their appreciation for the contributions of our DSP’s and to commend them for being “integral in supporting the long-term support and services system” in our community. In addition to the appreciation party and the Board Proclamation, a large group of Koinonia DSP’s will be attending the Ohio Alliance of Direct Support Professionals recognition event in Columbus Ohio on September 13th.
Direct Support Professional Recognition Week is part of the American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) National Advocacy Campaign, whose mission is to enhance the lives of all people with disabilities who rely on long-term supports and services by obtaining the resources to recruit, train and retain a highly qualified and sustainable workforce.
“DSP Recognition Week is one way we try to say, “thank you” to the people who turn the intentions of our laws and regulations written to provide opportunities for people with disabilities into actions,” said Barbara Merrill, CEO of ANCOR. “It’s also a very important reminder to our legislators and policymakers that this workforce is essential, and their wages and training deserve attention as states set rates for IDD services.”
Direct Support Professional Recognition Week is celebrated annually across the country with special events and ceremonies like these earmarked to honor the tens of thousands of workers who enable people with intellectual, developmental and other significant disabilities and their families to live healthy lives in their communities.
