Koinonia / About

The Koinonia Way is how we care, support, and lead to achieve our mission and values. We believe in supporting the personal growth and development of our associates and individuals, so everyone can realize their full potential.

A Commitment to Care

Koinonia is Northeast Ohio’s leading agency dedicated to ending the social, physical, and economic isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and other complex conditions. Founded in 1974, Koinonia provides residential, adult day, and career services to more than 350 people, with a staff of over 300 professionals. Our service portfolio includes 21 licensed group homes, more than 60 supported and shared living arrangements, transportation services, and shared living options.

Koinonia serves as a lifeline to true independence, health, meaningful employment, self-esteem, and appreciation. Over the past 48 years, the personal rights and quality of life for people with IDD have progressively advanced. Nonetheless, our culture remains far from inclusive, with a great number of people within the IDD community continuing to endure stereotyping.

Creating Opportunities, Enriching Lives

Support our mission of partnering with people who have developmental disabilities and other complex conditions, resulting in the highest possible quality of life through integrated, whole-person care.

Whole-Person Perspective

In 2021, we refined our mission to ensure that we address the whole person, integrating care and resources in ways that support the unique needs and preferences of each person we serve. Our goal is to provide integrated care that addresses the whole individual, including intellectual and developmental disability, mental health, behavioral health, and primary health conditions, many of which are inexorably linked in the population we serve.

By taking a whole-person integrated approach, we envision collaborative communities nationwide that accept, support, and optimize quality of life for all individuals with IDD, all while seeking new and innovative ways to improve. We developed this approach because of the dramatic rise in healthcare costs and to address the pressing need to treat every individual as a whole person. This includes not only mental and behavioral healthcare, but also an understanding of social and environmental issues that need to be considered when treating individuals with IDD. This approach includes all actions needed to keep the person safe and healthy, including healthcare, nutrition, and personal support.
